Facebook said Friday it would block the creation of new Facebook events near the White House, the U.S. Capitol Building, and the state Capitol Building due to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan.
In a blog post updated on Friday, the company said the action is intended to prevent people from using its platform to incite violence. It also prevents accounts and pages outside of the United States from creating events in the country.
Facebook said it also restricts other functions for people in the US based on certain signals, such as: B. Repeated violations of its guidelines. The company said it could prevent these accounts from creating live video or an event, group or page. It said it could add additional measures as needed.
Earlier this week, Facebook announced that it would remove content with the phrase “Stop the Steal” from its services in advance of the inauguration. Facebook previously removed a “Stop the Steal” group from its services in November and has since removed various other related groups and pages. However, the company announced that it took this extra step after the US Capitol riot last week.
Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, also said last week that the US Capitol riot was not “largely” organized through the services of the social media company. But there were still plenty of groups able to post on Facebook about the storming of the Capitol building prior to the uprising last week, CNBC previously reported.
Last week, Facebook prevented Trump from posting for at least the rest of his term in office.
