Somebody already turned Apple’s AirTag right into a slim, wallet-friendly card – .

Apple’s new AirTag article trackers are pretty small, but not all small enough to fit in most wallets without adding an obvious piece of bulk.

Fortunately, as one talented AirTag owner found out, this isn’t something you can’t fix with a heat gun, a bit of soldering, and an understanding that you can totally fry your shiny new AirTag in no time. Oh, and a 3D printer.

When Andrew Ngai noticed that much of the AirTag’s thickness was coming from the circuit board and the stacked battery, he set about arranging them side by side instead. With the help of some iFixit guides (which, by the way, is a fantastic look at the AirTag if you’re curious about what’s in it but don’t want to dissect one yourself), Andrew ripped the AirTag down to its main components. After making sure everything was still working in its freshly disassembled state, he 3D printed a new case, soldered in wires to connect the board to the battery some distance away, and put it all back together. Success! And he did it all within days of AirTag launch.

While this type of project requires a fairly wide range of skills, Andrew kindly did one of the steps for anyone who wants to take it on: he uploaded the STL file for the 3D printed card holder to Thingiverse as a free download. (Or you could just buy a Tile Slim, of course. But that doesn’t include soldering irons or 3D printing. Where’s the fun in it?)
