DETROIT – General Motors on Tuesday confirmed plans to produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup at a new flagship electric vehicle assembly plant under construction in Detroit.
The truck is part of a previously announced $ 2.2 billion investment in the plant to produce a line of next-generation electric vehicles that will begin with an all-electric GMC Hummer pickup later this year. Other vehicles planned for the facility include the recently launched Hummer EV SUV and an autonomous multi-passenger shuttle called Cruise Origin.
The plant, which GM renamed Factory Zero last year to accommodate the zero-emission electric vehicles it produces, is central to the automaker’s electric vehicle plans. It is the first of four North American plants that GM has announced will transition from producing internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. It will be a testing ground and proof of the company’s promise to produce profitable electric vehicles.

“Factory Zero vehicles will change the world and how the world sees electric vehicles,” said GM President Mark Reuss in a statement. “The GMC Hummer EV SUV joins its peer in the real-life supertruck space, and Chevrolet will put everything Chevy’s loyal truck buyers love – and more – about Silverado into an electric pickup that will delight both residential and commercial customers . “
GM declined to deliver when the Chevrolet pickup truck will go into production at Factory Zero, a 4.5 million square meter facility on the outskirts of Detroit and on the border with the city of Hamtramck. The Hummer EV pickup is expected to go on sale in the fall, followed by the Hummer EV SUV in early 2023.
The new Chevy Silverado EV will have a range of more than 400 miles on a full charge, according to GM.
The announced vehicles are part of GM’s plan to bring 30 new electric vehicles to market worldwide by 2025. During this period, $ 27 billion was invested in electric and autonomous vehicles. Until then, the company plans to sell at least 1 million electric vehicles annually – on its way to becoming a fully electric automaker by 2035.
