GoPro began at the intersection of performance and affordability in action cams, but has since become increasingly focused on professional use or enterprise delivery. The latest features announced at CES underscore this priority and make the rental and hands-free cameras simpler and more automated.
If you have a Hero 7, 8 or 9 Black or Max you should be able to download the latest GoPro Labs firmware, which has the following handy features.
Motion and USB Power Triggers: Set the camera to either start or stop recording when power is flowing to it (e.g. in a dash cam situation) or when it is in motion (for a bike or a ski helmet possibly). Motion detection has also been improved and now works in all video modes.
The cameras can already perform various tasks while scanning QR codes. But here’s a new one: you can use a QR code to instruct a device to connect to a specific Wi-Fi network and start streaming. It’s faster than the app when you need a quick deployment.
An obvious one for tourism is the “one-button mode”, which is expected to limit control to starting and stopping video recording. Great for less tech-savvy vacationers who can’t control more than one button, as well as rental properties who are tired of their cameras returning with weird custom settings after an overly tech-savvy customer tweaks them.
