According to market research company Gartner, Apple shipped more smartphones than any other company in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Apple shipped nearly 80 million units in the quarter, outperforming all other smartphone makers, including Samsung. Apple is at the top for the first time since 2016, according to the report released on Monday.
Apple’s strong vacation district and the new Gartner results continue to suggest that Apple’s iPhone 12 family of devices with 5G capability and new external design is a hit in the market. The results also suggest that Apple weathered the coronavirus pandemic better than its smartphone competitors.
Last month, a competing estimate said Apple shipped 90.1 million phones in the same quarter. According to market researcher IDC, this was the best quarter in the history of the smartphone in terms of shipments.
Apple does not report any sales for its devices. In the fourth quarter of the 2020 calendar, Apple had iPhone sales of $ 65.6 billion, up 17% year over year. Apple’s business is seasonal, and the quarter that ends in December is the company’s top-selling quarter. Apple’s latest iPhones weren’t even available for the entire quarter.
The smartphone market declined 5.4% in 2020 due to the global coronavirus pandemic, while Apple shipments increased 3.3%. Samsung still shipped most of the devices over a year.
The biggest drop on the table is due to Huawei, which shrank 24.1% in 2020, although it was still the third largest smartphone maker by volume. Huawei is grappling with US sanctions that have significantly hampered the cellphone business. Samsung isn’t facing the same challenge, but it saw shipments drop 14.6% in 2020, according to Gartner.
