SINGAPORE – Samsung announced on Monday that the next smartphone announcement would be on January 14th. The latest versions of its Galaxy flagship phones are expected to be presented there.

Invitations from the world’s largest smartphone maker said the event would air on the Samsung website next Thursday at 10 a.m. CET (11 p.m. SIN / HK time).

The launch takes place the same week as CES 2021 (digital only) – the biggest tech show of the year, where large companies often showcase their new products.

Samsung, South Korea’s electronics giant, typically launches its flagship Galaxy devices in February near or during the Mobile World Congress.

Samsung did not reveal much in its invitation to the event on January 14th. However, media reports of previous leaks suggest three phones could be announced: Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra, all of which are likely to replace the company’s S20 devices.

Last year, the South Korean company announced that its third-quarter profits were boosted in part by sales of smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 20. However, Samsung predicted that there will be intense competition in the smartphone and consumer electronics space in the final quarter of the year. According to analysts, this was likely due to Apple’s iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

Samsung’s cell phone president and head, TM Roh, said in a December blog post that Samsung will expand its portfolio of foldable smartphones and make those devices “more accessible” by 2021. These devices are more expensive than Samsung’s family of smartphone products, with the Galaxy Z Flip costing nearly $ 1,400.

Roh also teased the “high quality camera and video capabilities” of Samsung’s new smartphones, suggesting that some of the features available in the Galaxy Note devices may be added to other cell phones as well.

Samsung Electronics’ shares in South Korea rose nearly 3% on Monday.
